Iridescent Ammonite (Ammolite) – 100-66 million years old

Iridescent ammonite is the fossilised shell of an extinct marine mollusk from the Cretaceous period, known for its vibrant, rainbow-like surface called ammolite.

This gemstone forms from layers of aragonite that diffract light, creating brilliant colors, most commonly red and green, with rarer blues and purples. Nearly all gem-quality ammolite comes from the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada, where it was named the official provincial gemstone in 2004.

Ammonites were related to squids and used their coiled shells for buoyancy. Due to its beauty and rarity, ammolite is valued in both jewelry and Feng Shui, though it is soft and often stabilised for durability.

This Iridescent Ammonite (100-66 Million Years Old) has been mounted in a museum quality bell jar by a member of our in-house team.
