Knightia is an extinct genus of bony fish that lived in the freshwater lakes and rivers of North America and Asia during the Eocene epoch, approximately 50 - 40 Million years ago. It is one of the most commonly excavated fish fossils in the world, with hundreds occasionally being found in a single square metre of fossiliferous rock. Due to this evidence of mass mortality, and the known behaviour of closely related modern-day fish such as herring and sardines, it is believed that these fish lived in large shoals of hundreds of individuals.
