-
Period: Late Cretaceous (75 - 71 million years ago)
Range: North East Asia and Russia
Habitat: Hot sandy dunes
Size: 1.5 - 2 metres in length
Diet: Carnivorous
Unlike the velociraptors of Jurassic park fame, the real dinosaur was roughly the size of a turkey and covered in a fine feather-like coat. They were still formidable predators, reaching running speeds of 24mph and armed with an enlarged sickle-shaped claw on each foot which could grow up to 6.5 cm long. Originally thought to have been used to disembowel prey, it is now believed that velociraptors used this claw to tackle and pin their prey - similar to modern eagles and owls.
