The most striking feature of the Dilophosaurus skull is its pair of thin, bony crests running along the top of its head. These crests were likely used for display, species recognition, or possibly sexual selection, but not for combat as they were too delicate.
The skull was long and narrow, measuring about 23 inches (60 cm) in adults.
It was lightweight and full of openings (fenestrae) to reduce weight, a typical trait in early theropods.
