  • This 19th-century Kifwebe mask originates from the Songye people of the Democratic Republic of Congo and represents a powerful fusion of artistry, ritual, and symbolism. Carved from wood and adorned with traditional pigments, its striking features embody the spiritual authority associated with Kifwebe societies. Displayed on a matte black metal stand.

Used in ceremonies to enforce social order, initiate members, or ward off evil, Kifwebe masks were worn with raffia costumes and animated with dynamic, trance-like movement. The distinctive incised lines and exaggerated form were not merely decorative, they also conveyed metaphysical power and cultural identity.

A compelling artefact of Central African ritual tradition, this mask stands as both a sculptural object and a profound expression of ancestral presence and protection.

Base & Mount: Matte Black Stainless Steel
    Base Dimensions: 120x120mm

  • Name: 19th Century Kifwebe Mask
    Cultural Origin: Songye People
    Location: DR Congo
    Material: Carved Wood
    Age: Late 19th Century

Kifwebe masks were created by the Songye (and later the Luba) as part of the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe society, secret male and female societies tasked with enforcing moral codes, performing rites of passage, and maintaining social harmony. Male masks often featured more aggressive, angular designs and were used in powerful public displays; female masks had softer features and were worn in more restrained rituals.

The characteristic striations carved into the surface represent paths to the spiritual world and are symbolic of transformation. This mask, with its intense geometric expression and historical patina, offers a rare and authentic link to one of Central Africa’s most visually compelling ceremonial traditions.
