  • Period: Middle to Late Pleistocene (1.6 million years - 24,000 years ago)

    Range: Europe

    Size: 2 metres in length

    Diet: Omnivore

The cave bear is a prehistoric species of bear that lived in Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene and became extinct about 24,000 years ago during the last ice age.

Male cave bears weighed around 1000 lbs and were similar in size to today's Alaskan kodiak bear. This is about 30% larger than the brown bear. Analysis shows many cave bears were mostly herbivorous, feeding on plants and roots. However, they did sometimes eat meat, but rather than stalk and hunt their prey, they were most likely scavengers and opportunistic carnivores.
