Goniatite

This fossilised ammonite shell belonged to a Goniatite, an extinct group of marine molluscs that lived during the Palaeozoic period, approximately 350 million years ago. Displayed on a bespoke oak stand, the specimen highlights the ancient geometry of one of Earth’s earliest coiled cephalopods.

Goniatites are easily recognised by their smooth, tightly coiled shells and distinctive zigzag suture patterns, a simpler form compared to their later ammonite relatives. These animals inhabited shallow seas long before the age of dinosaurs, drifting through warm waters in search of food using primitive jet propulsion.

Carefully prepared and polished, the shell reveals natural mineralisation in tones of grey, cream, and subtle metallics. A quietly compelling piece that captures the early evolution of complex marine life.

Goniatites were among the earliest ammonoids, appearing long before their more ornate Mesozoic descendants. Their shells are typically smooth or gently ribbed, with tightly coiled whorls and simple, angular suture lines, traits that distinguish them from later ammonites.

These cephalopods lived in warm, shallow seas and were likely slow-moving, using primitive jet propulsion to navigate the water. Fossil specimens are often preserved in limestone, and many show mineral infillings that produce beautiful natural coloration and subtle iridescence when polished.
